Scam WhatsApp Messages – Fake Free Housing Offer
High RiskOverview
Scam WhatsApp messages are circulating across Ireland claiming to be from 'Ireland's Housing Plan' or similar official-sounding bodies, offering free housing to recipients. The messages urge people to click a link and fill in personal details to 'register' for a free home. This is a phishing scam designed to harvest personal information including PPS numbers, bank details, and identity documents. The Department of Housing has confirmed these messages are entirely fraudulent — no government scheme offers free housing via WhatsApp.

Typical Targets
- •People struggling to find affordable housing in Ireland
- •Young adults and first-time buyers priced out of the property market
- •Social housing applicants on long waiting lists
- •International workers and immigrants unfamiliar with Irish housing processes
- •Anyone who receives the forwarded message from a trusted contact
Why This Scam Works
- •Ireland's housing crisis makes any offer of free housing extremely tempting
- •Messages are forwarded by friends and family, adding false credibility
- •Official-sounding names like 'Ireland's Housing Plan' mimic real government schemes
- •The application form asks for details people expect to provide for housing (PPS number, income, address)
- •Desperation overrides caution — people want to believe it's real
- •The scam spreads virally through WhatsApp groups, reaching thousands quickly
Real Example
“A young couple in Dublin, on the social housing waiting list for 4 years, received a WhatsApp message forwarded by a family member: "The Government is giving away 2,000 free houses under Ireland's Housing Plan. Apply now before places fill up." They clicked the link and filled in their full names, PPS numbers, employer details, and bank account information for the "deposit refund". Within a week, a fraudulent credit card application had been made in their names, and €1,400 was taken from their bank account via direct debit.”

How to Avoid This Scam
- The Irish Government NEVER offers free housing via WhatsApp messages
- Official housing schemes are administered through local authorities, not messaging apps
- Never click links in unsolicited WhatsApp messages about government schemes
- Check gov.ie or citizensinformation.ie for genuine housing supports
- Be suspicious of any offer that sounds too good to be true
- Don't forward these messages — you may unknowingly help scammers reach more victims
- If a message claims urgency ("limited places", "apply now"), it's almost certainly a scam
- Verify with your local authority or Citizens Information before providing any personal details
