The Private Security Authority (PSA) is the statutory body responsible for regulating and licensing the private security industry in Ireland. Established under the Private Security Services Act 2004, the PSA ensures that all security personnel and contractors meet professional standards.

How to Get Your License

Check Your Eligibility

Common questions about PSA licenses
Q:How long does it take to get a PSA license?
From start to finish, expect 6-10 weeks. This includes training (1 week), Garda vetting (2-4 weeks), and PSA processing (2-6 weeks). Some people complete the process faster if vetting is quick.
Q:Can I work while my application is being processed?
No. You cannot work in any licensable security role until you have received your PSA license card. Working without a valid license is a criminal offence with fines up to €3,000.
Q:Will a criminal record prevent me from getting a license?
Not necessarily. The PSA assesses each application individually. Minor or old offences may not prevent approval. Serious or recent offences, especially violent or dishonesty-related crimes, are more likely to result in refusal. You can appeal a decision.
Q:Do I need to renew my license?
Yes. PSA licenses are valid for 2 years. Apply for renewal at least 2 months before expiry. If you've been working continuously, you won't need to retrain. If there's a gap of more than 2 years, refresher training may be required.
Q:Can I work in multiple security roles with one license?
Each license category covers specific activities. A Door Supervisor license doesn't allow you to work as a Static Guard. However, you can hold multiple licenses simultaneously. Many security professionals hold both Door Supervisor and Security Guard licenses.
Q:Is my Irish PSA license valid in the UK?
No. The PSA license is only valid in the Republic of Ireland. For work in Northern Ireland or Great Britain, you need an SIA (Security Industry Authority) license. The qualifications are not directly transferable.
Q:What happens if I lose my license card?
Report it to the PSA immediately and apply for a replacement. There's a €20 fee for a replacement card. You cannot work without your physical license card.
Q:Can non-Irish citizens get a PSA license?
Yes, if you have the legal right to work in Ireland. EU/EEA citizens have automatic work rights. Non-EU citizens need a valid work permit or stamp 4. Student visas (stamp 2) may have restrictions.
