Before Your Course
Research training providers thoroughly
Check reviews on Google, ask in forums, and verify they're PSA-approved. Price isn't everything - quality instruction makes a difference.
Get your Garda vetting started early
Vetting can take 2-4 weeks. Some training providers offer to start this before your course. Don't let it delay your license application.
Prepare for the physical aspects
Door supervisor courses include physical intervention techniques. Being reasonably fit will help you learn more effectively.
Study basic conflict resolution
Watch YouTube videos on de-escalation techniques. Having a foundation will help you absorb the course material faster.
During Your Training
Take detailed notes
The exam includes scenario-based questions. Your notes will be invaluable for revision. Focus on legal powers, conflict resolution steps, and emergency procedures.
Practice physical techniques at home
The holds and restraint techniques need muscle memory. Practice the movements (carefully) between class sessions.
Network with your classmates
Your fellow trainees are your future industry contacts. Many jobs come through word-of-mouth. Exchange numbers and stay connected.
Ask questions about real scenarios
Instructors with industry experience can share insights you won't find in textbooks. Ask about tricky situations they've encountered.
Landing Your First Job
Start with agencies, even if you want permanent
Security agencies are always hiring. Get 3-6 months experience, then apply for better positions. Most permanent roles want some experience.
Apply to multiple companies simultaneously
Don't wait for one response before applying elsewhere. Major employers: Securitas, G4S, Manguard Plus, Noonan, Ward Security.
Tailor your CV for security
Highlight customer service experience, any military/garda reserve background, first aid certs, and situations where you stayed calm under pressure.
Be flexible with shifts initially
Showing willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays will get you more opportunities and faster progression.
On The Job Success
Document everything
Write detailed incident reports. Good documentation protects you legally and shows professionalism. Include times, names, actions taken.
Master the art of communication
90% of the job is talking to people. A friendly "evening lads, how's it going?" defuses more situations than physical intervention ever will.
Know when NOT to act
Your job is to observe and report, not to be a hero. If something is beyond your capability or authority, call the Gardaí.
Build relationships with regular staff
Bar staff, managers, cleaners - they're your eyes and ears. They'll alert you to problems before they escalate.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
✗Choosing training based on price alone
Risk: Poor quality instruction means you'll struggle on the job and may need to retrain.
Read reviews, ask about instructor experience, and check their pass rates.
✗Not renewing your license on time
Risk: Working without a valid license is illegal. You could face prosecution and a criminal record.
Set calendar reminders 3 months before expiry. Renewal takes time.
✗Getting physical too quickly
Risk: Excessive force claims, potential prosecution, losing your license, and industry blacklisting.
Verbal de-escalation first. Physical intervention is last resort and must be proportionate.
✗Not knowing your legal powers
Risk: Either overstepping (assault charges) or failing to act when you should (negligence).
Review your training materials regularly. Know the difference between citizen's arrest and your role.
✗Burning bridges with employers
Risk: Security is a small industry in Ireland. Bad reputation travels fast.
Always give proper notice, stay professional, and maintain relationships.

Best Times to Apply
September-October (back to college, events resume), February-March (post-Christmas hiring), and April-May (festival season prep) are peak hiring periods.
Salary Expectations 2024
Entry-level: €12-14/hr. Experienced (2+ years): €14-18/hr. Specialist roles (CIT, close protection): €18-25/hr. Dublin rates typically 10-15% higher.
Career Progression
Security Guard → Supervisor (2-3 yrs) → Site Manager (4-5 yrs) → Operations Manager. Or specialize: Close Protection, CCTV Operations, or start your own company.
